Spicy Salmon Avocado Roll and Veggie Sushi

Sushi is so much fun to make at home, although I'll admit it can be challenging. Be prepared to throw a few rolls out when you're first starting (but of course keep the good stuff that goes inside). Also, watch some YouTube videos to see how other people roll it. I've been making veggie sushi for a few years now, and it's always a hit when I make it for a party. After I heard about McCall's Meat and Fish Co. near my local Trader Joes, I've wanted to stop by for some fresh salmon so I could kick my rolls up a few notches. I'm so glad I did because this sushi really hit the spot. Scroll down for a list of ingredients.

Spicy Salmon Avocado Roll

White rice (long or short grain is fine)
Rice Vinegar (when I went to buy it, there were 2 kinds. Regular rice vinegar and seasoned. I prefer the regular but either works)
Nori seaweed sheets
Avocado slices
Sushi grade salmon, cut into thin strips (it's very important to use salmon that is "sushi grade" so you can eat it raw)
Mayo and Sriracha for the spicy sauce
Sesame Seeds


Put a large ziploc bag over your sushi mat so the rice won't stick to it

Cut a nori sheet in half (if you prefer larger rolls than above, use a whole nori sheet)

Place the nori sheet down and use your hands to pat down the rice. Sprinkle the rice with sesame seeds and flip the sheet over so the rice side is against the sushi mat

Place the salmon and avocado an inch away from one of the sides and start rolling the sushi (I suggest watching a YouTube video to see how it's done)

Seal the sushi by putting water on your fingers and spreading it over the seal. With a large serrated knife, cut the sushi into pieces, making sure to dip the knife into water before each cut

Top with a dollop of spicy mayo

Serve with low-sodium soysauce, ginger, wasabi and hot sake!

Veggie Roll

White rice, rice vinegar, nori seaweed sheets and sesame seeds as above
Avocado slices
Carrots, peeled and sliced into thin strips with a vegetable peeler
Cucumber, cut into long, medium sized strips (leave the middle seeds out)
Bean Sprouts

Use the same directions as above

  3. We sometimes make our own sushi too! It's really fun and always so delicious. We actually call it a "sushi party" because we invite lots of friends and make a night out of it.
